Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. It is the city of Temples. It lies in central Nepal. In the past, it also called Kantipur which means the “city of Glory”. Later it is named Kathmandu derived from Kasthamandap Temple situated in Basantapur.
My journey to kathmandu
Whether you live in Nepal or outside, a trip to Kathmandu valley makes for fun and adventure day. I had lived outside of the valley for almost 15 years, but it was the winter of 2017 that finally made a trip to Kathmandu. I guess its one of those things that when you live here you assume you can go at any time, and you never get around to doing it. Now that I have been, I can’t wait to go back.
Some interesting facts about Kathmandu are;
Kathmandu lies in Kathmandu valley which is also called a city of temples.
The city was originated from a lake which was surrounded by hills and mountains from all sides.
As most of the people here are Hindu,they follow Hindu culture and the greeting word is ‘Namaste’.
The valley is home to different religions and races but the human existence in the valley was started with the Newari community. They were the original descendants of Kathmandu valley nearly from 2 millennium period. Newari are the actual descendants of Kathmandu
Out of 10 world heritage sites,7 belongs to Kathmandu only.
Kathmandu is also famous for its durbar squares. There are mainly 3 durbar squares; Kathmandu durbar square, Bhaktapur durbar square, Patan durbar square.
The main importance of this city is the Pashupatinath temple which is also called one of the holiest places for Hindus.
What to see
1.Pashupatinath Temple: if you belong to the Hindu religion, then it is one of the holiest places on earth.
2.Patan durbar square: Being listed in World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Patan durbar square is famous for its museum and golden temple of the buddha.
3. Kathmandu durbar square: Kathmandu durbar square is the site of the Hanuman Dhoka Palace Complex, which was the royal Nepalese residence until the 19th century and where important ceremonies, such as the coronation of the Nepalese monarch, took place.
4.Bhaktapur durbar square: The major attractions around the area are 55 window palace, Batsalatemple, statues of BhupatindraMalla, Nyatapola temple, Bhairav temple, Golden gate, Lion’s gate, Mini Pashupatinath temple, etc
5.Bouddhanath stupa: Bouddhanath stupa is semicircle shaped and contains the relics and remaining of the buddha. The is a historical pilgrimage site for all the Buddhist around the world
6.Swoyambunath: Swayambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu. Perched atop a hill on the western edge of the Kathmandu Valley, the ancient Swayambunath Stupa (known to tourists as the Monkey Temple) in Kathmandu’s most important Buddhist shrine.
Specialties of the city
Kathmandu is famous for its history, tradition, and fashion. It is also famous for street spicy food. People living here are fashionable and educated.
Momo is one of the favorite street food all over the valley and juju dhau is a type of curd special in Bhaktapur.
Basantapur and Patan durbar square are famous places for lighting during the evening time.
Thamel is the best place for nightlife due to the presence of bars, clubs and decorative environments.
In conclusion, we can say Kathmandu is one of the beautiful valleys in the world. It is cheap, safe and full of beautiful and historical places in the world. You can get there by air as well as by land.
